Black Burlesque Scholarship
When we started Empowerment in Heels in 2017, we aimed to create a welcoming environment for everyone to enjoy burlesque. We've noticed that our classes may not be easily available to BIPOC folks looking to connect with their bodies. Although we invite people of all levels, genders, orientations, and ethnicities, our community is mostly white cis-women. Inspired by a panel on anti-racism in burlesque at the Vancouver International Burlesque Festival in 2020, we are taking steps to improve accessibility.
Black Burlesque Scholarship
The Black Burlesque Scholarship aims to celebrate and empower Black performers in the art of burlesque. Burlesque, with its rich history rooted in diverse cultural expressions, has often overlooked the contributions of Black artists. This scholarship seeks to rectify that by providing financial support and opportunities to help Black individuals pursue their dreams within this vibrant performance art.
This scholarship grants five free burlesque classes to individuals who identify as Black with the intention of fostering healing, connection, and self-love. Eligible applicants include aspiring burlesque performers ranging from beginners to those with prior experience looking to enhance their skills.
Support and Community
This community aims to foster collaboration, provide guidance, and encourage the sharing of knowledge among performers. Through Empowerment in Heels events, recipients can connect with peers and learn from established artists in the field.
The Black Burlesque Scholarship serves not only as a pathway to individual artistic growth, but also as a celebration of culture, resilience, and empowerment. It recognizes the importance of representation in the arts and aims to inspire a new generation of Black burlesque performers.
The Black Burlesque Scholarship is designed for individuals who identify as Black and are interested in the art of burlesque. Eligible applicants include:
Aspiring Performers: Those who are new to the burlesque scene and seek financial support to help enhance their skills and develop performances.
Practicing Artists: Individuals actively involved in burlesque performance looking for resources to elevate their craft.
Students: Those enrolled in educational programs related to performing arts, dance, or theater that wish to incorporate burlesque into their studies.
Community Leaders: Applicants who aim to promote and support the Black burlesque community through mentorship, workshops, or events.
The scholarship encourages diversity and inclusion within the burlesque community and aims to uplift Black voices and talents in this artistic space.
